Small Back Room feature on the BBC

Small Back Room are delighted that our great work with Herefordshire in 2012 has featured in an extensive article on the BBC about the importance of place brands.

In 2012 Small Back Room created the Herefordshire "Here You Can" brand. The "here" message - which plays on the county's name – came about because when we scratched below the surface of the county, we found communities, inviduals and businesses creating success stories. These stories were being told on a local, national and even international scale. We also found people with the opportunity not to compromise work/life balance.

It was this positivity and balanced attitude which drove us to the positioning concept "Here you can"- which we felt communicates the underlying character of the county and enables the brand to tell stories of achievement and opportunity.

Four years on, a recent article on the BBC website had a lot of positive things to say about this work. Rachel Jones, brand manager, said: "Here You Can is such a positive and strong message... the branding is still warming up... and we can do clever things with it. ...We will keep the message for as long as it continues working for us."

At the heart of the brand is the Hereford Bull – a local icon, treated in different ways so it becomes relevant to different audiences and subject matter and has endless creative potential, like the county itself. We are pleased with this particular branding project and are proud the BBC chose to cite it as an example of why branding is important if done well.
