Small Back Room winners for Lakeland at Retail Interior Awards
London, 1st October 2009. Small Back Room picked up the award for
their work on Lakeland in the best edge of town store category at
The Retail Interiors Awards.
At a ceremony and dinner attended by over 500 people from the world
of design and retail, a total of fifteen awards were presented.
Callum Lumsden, creative director of Lumsden at Small Back Room accepted
the award and afterwards said; "The team has done a fantastic
job on helping to create a store environment that showcases Lakeland's
excellent range of products. For our work to be recognised in such
a way underpins our belief that good design benefits customers, staff
and the business itself."
He went on to say "Lakeland are constantly innovating their business
and with the Durham store they have taken yet another step forward
in presenting their customers with a shopping environment which endorses
their core offer as 'the home of creative kitchenware'. It is a great
example of a successful retailer testing out new design concepts in
tough and challenging times and which will be trickled down into future
store openings."
Julian Rayner, managing director of Lakeland was also at the event
and commented, "'the standard of competition was very high and
I'm pleased that the Lumsden at Small Back Room team have been recognised
for their sound and inspiring design work'
New features that appear in the winning Lakeland store for the first
time include;
Departmentalising the store
Feature areas for core products including a multi purpose demonstration
'kitchen'. This never been seen before initiative (for Lakeland) utilises
the retailer's newly launched own brand electrical products, including
kettles, mixers and ice cream makers and provides a perfect opportunity
to showcase the new range.
A dedicated area for cleaning products branded 'essentials' has been
created. The use of white chamfered tiles gives the area a clean,
stark and distinct utilitarian feel.
"Hot Spot" areas have been designated throughout the store
to display specific product groupings and enabling visual merchandise
opportunities. New mid-floor and wall bay designs have been incorporated
including 3.6 meter high kitchen dresser units, brick-clad wall bays,
window display dressers and new header graphics.
Wow factor and central feature
A feature chandelier - 2m in diameter and 2.5m in depth, created by
Lumsden at Small Back Room and using 359 actual Lakeland products
(whisks, spatulas, sieves etc.). This striking central feature is
designed as a visual draw into the store.
Lumsden at Small Back Room produced the whole store design, branding
and graphics for the Durham site.
