Shakespeare’s Globe

The play’s the thing

Designing the concepts for the 2012 Shakespeare’s Globe season created an unusual challenge. As well as developing the unifying theme to tie the season’s plays together, we were briefed to visualise the new ‘Globe to Globe’ project: where all 37 Shakespeare plays were to be performed in 37 different languages by companies from around the world.

The season concept for 2012 was a line from Hamlet: ‘The play’s the thing’. We illustrated this theme by contrasting the raw energy of the Globe with the sophistication seen on stage, and by using photos of areas of the theatre that usually stay hidden: like the props department, the Tiring Room and the attic.

The Globe to Globe project was conceived as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It presented an interesting typographical challenge, with 37 languages included in one brochure, stretching from Maori to Korean to British Sign Language.
