National Museum of Scotland

The £47m redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland was expected to send visitor numbers soaring. The Museum needed two retail spaces ready for the higher volumes, and tasked us to design them. Both had to be highly functional, but also be integral to the Museum experience.

The main shop anchors one end of the dramatic entrance hall. We carefully planned the shop to maximise flow around the existing piers and columns of the stone vault, and used contemporary forms and materials following a carefully selected palette to blend with the wider Museum aesthetic.

The second shop is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and is located on a busy mezzanine adjacent to the gallery itself. The key challenge in this high traffic area was to create both an open and inviting space, offering inherent flexibility to support an ever-evolving product range.
